In 1562 the French Huguenots led by Capt. Jean Ribault laid claim to East Florida, subsequently followed by the Spanish who were the first settlers establishing missions from Mayport to St. Augustine. In 1763 the Spanish ceded East Florida to the English through a treaty, only to regain control twenty years later. In 1821 the Spanish surrendered East Florida one final time to the United States of America. Jacksonville Beach was incorporated on May 22, 1907, as Pablo Beach, and in 1923 would later change its name to Jacksonville Beach.
Jacksonville is part of a group of communities collectively referred to as the Jacksonville Beaches. These communities include Mayport, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Ponte Vedra Beach. Jacksonville Beach and its neighboring beaches offer 22 miles of sandy shores, ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports. The Jacksonville Beach Pier is a popular spot for fishing and provides stunning views of the coastline and beautiful sunrises. Jacksonville Beach is dotted with lively beachfront bars offering a diverse range of cuisine and vibrant nightlife. Jacksonville boasts the largest urban park system in the U.S. and has many rivers, lakes, marshes, and oceanfront to explore. Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve is a 46,000-acre preserve that captures the unspoiled glory of Northeast Florida’s coastal wetlands. The preserve includes the Fort Caroline National Memorial, a 16th-century French fort and the site of early contact between American Indians and European settlers. Kingsley Plantation is within this property and is the oldest plantation in Florida, constructed in the late 1700s. Explore the grounds that include Planter's Houses, Tabby Slave Quarters, and scenic vistas of Ft. George River and coastal wetlands. Closer to downtown Jacksonville, on the Southbank, Treaty Oak Park is home to one of Jacksonville’s oldest residents, a 250-year-old Southern live oak tree. Memorial Park in the Five Points neighborhood is another local favorite. This waterfront park features sweeping views of the St. Johns River.
